For my first five years of elementary school, I went to school about two miles from my grandparent’s home at the same school where my mother also taught. Often in the afternoon on the way home from school, we would stop by their home to chat, visit, pick something up, or drop something off. The first names that I used to call my maternal grandparents were, “Ma,” and, “Dada.” However, around the age of 9 or 10, I grew self-conscious of those names because to my ears they sounded like baby talk compared to the other names kids called their grandparents. I started using, “Grandma,” and, “Grandpa.” In retrospect, my self-consciousness probably stemmed from reading so many books where grandparents had bland grandparent names. It’s funny what kids do.

Any time that we stopped by my grandparent’s house, I would begin a treasure hunt. Grandma had all kinds of food in her kitchen that wasn’t at home: White Bread with Butter, Sleeves of Ritz Crackers, Left-over Fried Chicken or Pork Chops from the day’s lunch meal (their biggest meal of their day), or Biscos Sugar Wafers. (To this day, when I get sick, I send my husband to the grocery store after Biscos Sugar Wafers because that’s what Grandma or Mama gave me when I stayed home from school sick. I am not interested in any other brands, only Biscos are light and sweet and creamy in the exact curative proportions.)

The biggest treasure hunt score was always when I noticed Grandma’s orange cake carrier out on the counter. Cake! Usually, I would excitedly open the carrier to find pound cake; always awesome, but not the ultimate prize. The best days were the days when the big reveal exposed Grandma’s Sticky Chocolate Cake (if you click the link, it will take you to the recipe for this amazing treat). I was in heaven with a can of Diet Coke (or Tab before that) and a huge paper plate of chocolate cake.

Many years later after my grandmother died, when my Mom and Aunts were cleaning my grandparent’s house, my Mom asked me if there was anything from Grandma’s that I wanted. The only I could think of was Grandma’s orange cake carrier. It now has a treasured place on our dining room hutch, though I wish I baked a lot more, so I could leave it on the counter with cake inside. Maybe if Rob and I have children one day, I will be able to share with them the anticipation of seeing the orange cake carrier on the counter and slowly lifting the top to reveal their heart’s desire.

My grandma’s cake carrier was a “LookLift” Cake Carrier. From time to time, one can still be found on etsy or eBay (like the examples above).

Heading north on Highway 179, I saw this very awesome sign right next to Big Nell’s Pit Stop; I have truly found my candidate in the next election.

I was recently reading Apartment Therapy’s post on warm and cool people (find by clicking here) and their design styles. I am definitely a warm person. Rob and I have created a home full of tchotchkes and things that make us smile. Our problems are weeding out stuff we don’t use and organizing the stuff we do use. (Rob may be a cool person on his own, but with me, he has no choice but to be warm.) I have been trying very hard to keep lots of negative spaces in our new home & not fill everything to the brim with stuff!

That said, I love my kitchen window and looking out while I’m working in the kitchen at the neighborhood. My cats love sitting up there too!

In this picture, we see the window in it’s full glory. The mobile hanging above is a fruit mobile that I remember as always having hung in my grandparents kitchen until they both passed away. The shelf itself is from Ikea; it’s the Marginal shelf with retaining edge (a must in the kitchen). Hanging below the shelf are some cheese plates I got at a second-hand store that function as both my homage to glorious cheese and an ironic reminder to my husband that he is very weird (in that he does not eat cheese). Texas (the fat cat) doesn’t always sit there, but she makes an awesome addition when she does! The large candle next to Texas was an awesome housewarming gift from aunt & uncle when I moved into my last apartment.

In this picture you see another cute cheese dish from a second-hand shop (more irony for Rob), a really handy vinaigrette mixer my Mom gave us, and geese measuring cups from Anthropologie (another gift from Mom). There’s also some older Ikea stainless steel storage cups in the background; we use those to collect rubber bands and paper clips. The curtain is from Pier 1, and I love the colors!

In this photo, you see the back of previously noted fat cat Texas (she’s such a sweetie). A gorgeous vase my friend Justine gave Rob and me for our wedding (it has our birthstone greens in it–the theme colors from our wedding–peridot & emerald) that displays/dispenses our collection of straws. I love the vase too much; I have to use it for something besides flowers, so it can stay out all the time. There’s also a handpainted antique dollhead from Etsy filled with pens, paintbrushes, and a bottle opener, a sake cup/dish from my friend Mariko’s wedding (coolest touch during the ceremony for everyone to drink/toast with the bride & groom), and a little second-hand deer toothpick holder.

And to end, one more picture of my gorgeous cat!

We were really lucky that some of our family members were able to come over to our apartment and celebrate with us. We made everyone try our year old cake, which was actually quite tasty.

When we cut our top cake!

The cake with our toppers-the glass ant & spider. The icing was sort of mangled from being wrapped up & frozen, but it was good!

If you ever need to buy me a present, any of their shoes (in size 11-yay! they make 11) would be a perfect, though expensive, gift.

From their website:

Re-mix shoes are faithful reproductions of classic styles from the 1920′s to the 1950′s–famous for the sporty comfort of our wedges, sexy 194′s heels, classic pumps, 1930′s lace-up oxfords, saddle shoes, penny loafers, white bucks, blue suede shoes and more!

If you like vintage, they make the perfect shoe for you. I currently own 3 pairs, but one day I hope to own them all–in every color! Mine are pictured below:
I took some photos to document the whole thing because snow is so rare in this part of the world. The best was watching my cats. They’d never seen snow before, and they were at two windows ready to attack any flake they could.
