In preparation for the holiday season, I’ve been making paper ornaments. These ornaments are perfect for wreaths, trees, garlands, or as my favorite use — a gorgeous substitution for a traditional bow when you wrap a gift. It’s amazing how pretty folded & cut paper can be!

Today, I’m going to just post some pictures of the ornaments I’ve made (along with a link to my Etsy shop where these ornaments can be purchased). AND tomorrow, I’m going to post a tutorial where you can learn to make these ornaments yourself. The ornaments are infinitely customizable — like snowflakes, but they remind me more of flowers in their execution.

I’ve made the paper ornaments out of patterned & solid colored papers,

but my favorite ornaments are made from catalog paper! (In this case West Elm & Free People; such pretty colors!)

They’re a lot of fun to make; they’re pretty easy to make; and they can be used for so many things! If you’d like to purchase a set of these, just check out my Etsy shop here: JulepStyle.com on Etsy!

This past weekend, we had a lot of fun getting in the spirit of the season and decorating for Halloween. In an effort to better document my Halloween exploits, I’m going to try to post a project each day.

One of the oldest projects on my Halloween to-do list was to make a wreath. Last year, I bought a spooky-ish (but plain) black wreath from CVS on 60% clearance the week after Halloween was over. The wreath sat in our Halloween bins in the attic all year. I got it out this past weekend and decided to spice it up with some dollar store items: Centipedes, roaches, a fly, spiders, a ghoul, and the dollar store spooky gray cloth. Total budget for this wreath ended up being about $5, and we’re pretty pleased with the effect.

When I realized that Rob and I needed a sideboard/credenza for our dining room to hold serving pieces and extra dishes, I began looking at all our options. I quickly realized that I didn’t really want a sideboard enough to part with hundreds of dollars. I wanted a stopgap sideboard that would suffice until I could afford the sideboard of my dreams.

Enter ugly dresser found from Craigslist:

This dresser had 4 things that made it the perfect temporary sideboard:
1. Cabinets with doors in addition to drawers. Drawers can be useful in a dining room (hello silverware storage), but for the most part they become unwieldy when filled with heavy dishes. The cabinets with doors are perfect for large heavy stacks of plates and other china. (The drawers are perfect for bulky large platters or those over-sized chip/dip trays that won’t fit anywhere else in your house.)
2. Interesting Hardware. The drawer pulls had some spunk.
3. Interesting Architecture. The cabinet doors had some intriguing ornament to them. Don’t get me wrong; it’s definitely UGLY — late 70′s/early 80′s plastic-glued-to-manufactured-wood furniture. However, when looking at the pictures of the dresser on Craigslist and later in person at the thrift store, I saw some potential.
4. Cheap price. I’m not going to euphemize this one; the dresser wasn’t affordable or cost-efficient. It was cheap. And at a fraction of the cost of my other options, I pulled the trigger.

Fast forward through the horrible difficulties of transporting over-sized, manufactured wood furniture (thanks Mom for letting me borrow your Envoy!), and I had to decide how to make this ugly dresser fit in our cute little home. I did some research online & decided on spray paint, but not just any old color. I chose silver spray paint with gold for the handles. We lugged the monstrosity outside, gave it a good cleaning, and 3 coats of spray paint later, Voilà!:

Gilding (silvering) makes it all look ok!

Although it has been some time since I’ve posted, I’d thought I’d feature a project that I really enjoy knitting for friends–bracelets! I recently made this bracelet for an amazing lady’s birthday present. Before sealing it up in the gift box, I took a few pictures for julepstyle. Each knitted bracelet I’ve made has been very different, but I’m pretty pleased with how this bracelet turned out.

I didn’t really take enough images to do a tutorial, but I can briefly explain how I made this bracelet. I start with 24 Gauge, Tarnish Resistant Copper Wire. To incorporate the beads into the bracelet, they need to all be on the wire before you begin knitting. Thread about 3-4′ of beads on the wire. (I am never really exact about this; I always err on the side of too many beads, because once you start knitting, you can’t add more.) Then start knitting!

For this bracelet, I cast on 7 stitches (has to be an odd number for me) to size 8 metal circular knitting needles; I think my normal bamboo needles might be damaged by the wire over time. The whole bracelet is done in garter stitch; each time you make a new knit stitch, just bring up a bead and use it in the stitch. Keep knitting until the bracelet’s the desired length. There is some give with the metal; you can stretch it or compress it if you need to after it’s finished. I haven’t been able to find copper clasps that I am happy with, so I just used a shiny silver clasp that blended with the bead colors. Just space the jump rings evenly over the ends of the bracelet, and it’s finished!

I’m taking this opportunity to try out some new technology. Yesterday, I finally relented and upgraded my 16gb white iPhone 3G to the 16gb white iPhone 4. On Sunday, we were at Walmart buying our food for the week and trying to stay out of the way of all the tourists. On a whim, I asked if we could check to see if the store had any of the white phones in, now that they were being offered for $147. And although Rob had called earlier in the week (to ask the same thing) with no luck, this time we hit the jackpot! Walmart had 2! white iPhones in stock.

On Saturday, Rob and I timed the speeds it took my 3G and his 4 to perform tasks. It took 40 seconds on my phone to open the camera, take a picture, and return to the home screen. That was unacceptable. Now my cute little phone is functional again! (And it matches its sister – my white iPad 2.)

This post is really just an experiment in blogging. I’m making the whole post from my new iPhone. The star of this post is a new indoor/outdoor rug that I bought for our master bathroom. I’ve seen this rug a few places online (here and here), but I found the best price for it at OutdoorRugsOnly.com.

Check out how it looks in our bathroom! We’re using it to replace a brown shag; I just wasn’t happy with how the shag stood up to the harsh bathroom environment. It’s a little crazy, but I think that Rob and I both like it. Even the cats are getting used to it.

Our front door has a big decorative glass window in it. To give us the feeling of privacy in the evening, we hung a curtain on the door. At night, we go into “lockdown.” This process simply entails pulling the curtains on the front door and kitchen window that looks out onto our front porch.

In the fall, I hang a gray velvet curtain (matches our couch) from Anthropologie –the Viceroy Velvet Curtain. (One of my splurges with our house). I found a matching gray curtain at TJMaxx and used the iron-on hem tape to shorten it to fit our kitchen window. (There was no way I was going to buy another Viceroy Velvet and massacre it.)

Viceroy Velvet Curtain Closed

When Spring comes, I switch out these gray velvet curtains for something , lighter, friendlier, and more colorful. I found two curtains at Pier One on sale when we first moved in; I loved the colors and snatched them up. I hung the one in the kitchen from it’s bottom hem instead of using the loops (again using the iron-on hem tape to shorten the curtain to fit).

Spring has definitely sprung. This weekend, Rob and I began our spring update to our home and yard. The first item of business was replacing the Winter Yarn Wreath I made in January with an updated spring wreath! I made our new wreath with a straw wreath, yarn, bias tape, paper flowers, and colorful buttons.

1. The first step is to start with the straw wreath. Place the wreath in a bag and remove the plastic wrap. You have to do this in a bag because the wreath will make a huge mess as you remove the plastic. Straw will go everywhere!

Straw Wreath Wrapped in Plastic

Unwrapping the Wreath in a Bag

2. After you’ve unwrapped the wreath, leave it in the bag. Cut 1.5-2″ wide strips of scrap cloth (mine is from an old pillowcase that I use to practice sewing on). Wrap the cloth around the straw wreath, securing each end with stick pins. At this point, I usually choose a front & back for the wreath and try to keep all the ends of fabric on the back side.

Pillowcase Strips

Wrapping the Wreath

3. To smooth the profile of the wreath, I wrapped the whole thing in yarn next. I used an off-white yarn that I had salvaged from a thrift-store sweater. Make a small knot in the end of the yarn and use a stick pin to secure it to the back of the wreath. Wrap the wreath and then secure the end knot to the back of the wreath.

Knot and Stick Pin

Yarn Wrapped Wreath

4. Since it’s not winter anymore, I didn’t want the main texture of this wreath to be yarn; I associate yarn with wool & sweaters & cold! I used a deep green single-fold bias tape to wrap the yarn wreath.

Start the Bias Tape on the Back

Fully Wrapped Wreath

5. Now the hard work is done, and it’s time to have fun. Lay out your paper flowers and buttons to figure out which combinations you’re going to use. Then pin these flowers to the wreath. By pinning them first (instead of stitching), you can tweak your composition as needed.

Flowers and Buttons

Pinning to the Wreath

Finished Wreath Composition

6. The last step is to stitch the flowers-with-buttons on to the wreath. I used a golden crewel wool and a really big needle. The more layers you go through (bias tape, yarn, straw), the more securely attached the flower button will be. After you get the needle through, stitch on the flower, and finish with a knot. (Then trim the ends; I used a pretty long strand of yarn, so I could just trim and move on to the next flower without re-threading my needle.)

The Stitch

Tie on the Flower/Button

And then you have your finished wreath!

Finished Wreath

I added a little bee that I made out of some pompoms and pipe cleaners before I hung the wreath on our door.

Bee Detail

One of the blogs that I read everyday is Prudent Baby. They have really cute projects and generally inspiring posts. They also have lots of contests for various prizes, but I usually don’t enter because their contests are usually sewing-related (and I am not a sewer–yet). However, on March 17th they announced a, “Sweet on Paper Contest,” to win an 11×17 Brother Printer. I really need a new printer, so I developed this flower-shaped box as my entry. The azaleas that are starting to bloom around our yard to signal the start of spring were an excellent source of inspiration.

To download the flower box template, please click here. ETA: To download the flower box template with treat dispenser, please click here (it’s slightly smaller to allow for printing a tab that goes inside the box to help secure it AND it has the dispenser pre-printed on the side) . There are four different versions: two, five-sided boxes and two, six-sided boxes in four exciting colors! (And if you happen to find my blog and this post, and you need this pattern in a different color combination, let me know. I will probably be able to help you out!) I drew the pattern in CAD software because I find it to be generally more precise than illustrator, especially at geometry. I then exported the DWG file to illustrator to create the final patterns. Voilà!

The folding is a little complicated, so I tried to take detailed pictures for this tutorial. Please excuse my weird fingers.
1. Print and cut out the flower-shaped box template.
2. Punch holes for lacing that hold box together. I didn’t print the holes on the template, because I don’t like to have ghost lines if you don’t line your punch up correctly. See the image below for the locations of the holes; I like to use a small 1/8″ hole-punch.
3. Then you need to score the template using a bone folder (the end of my bone folder is chipped, but it still works fine). Use a metal straight edge to keep your scores straight. In the template, these first scores are lined up with a row of polka dots. After you make the scores, go ahead and fold along the lines. Use the bone folder to make these folds extra crisp.

Scoring the Template - Step 1

4. The second set of scores/folds are perpendicular to the first. These folds are located down the middle of the larger “petals” on the template.

Second Set of Scores

5. The final set of scores/folds are along the edges of the larger petals. I hold the bone folder like a pencil and press down pretty hard as I freehand the petal edges. Shape the petals by folding along these scores before you begin to assemble the box.

Final Score Locations

6. Assemble the bottom face of the flower box by threading a needle with some scrap yarn, ribbon, or thread. Run the needle through the pre-punched holes.

Lacing up the Bottom

7. After you lace all the holes, pull the yarn as tight as you can (without breaking the box).

Pull Tight

8. Tape edges together under box with a small piece of tape.
9. Flip the box back over, pull thread tight, and tie a small knot to secure the bottom folds.

Tie a Knot to Secure

10. To create the center of the flower, tie a button (of any color) over your knot. Make a sort of mini-pompom for the “stamens” by wrapping some coordinating yarn around two fingers. Tie this yarn onto the button top, and then trim and clip the ends of the yarn.
11. To finish up the top of the box, flip it over. Tape edges of top of flower box together. Tape the tab on the side of the box to secure the box structure. Fill the box with treats, and lace the top holes together.

Tape Edge Together

12. Pull the laces tight. The top of the box should have a domed look. Finish off top of the box in the same manner as the bottom.
13. How to add an optional side dispenser for your treats: After scoring and folding the box, fold over the side tab to see how much coverage you will get. Sketch in a small square to dispense the treats and a slit to secure the tab. Check the sketch with the side tab, and then cut out the square and slit with an x-acto knife.
I hit my favorite thrift stores in Calabash, Sunset Beach, and Ocean Isle. (I found some cool items too, but that’s another story.) Heading north on Highway 179, I saw this very awesome sign right next to Big Nell’s Pit Stop; I have truly found my candidate in the next election.
